Updating centos 5

20 Jan

One of the newest things added to Cent OS 7 is the capability to do an in place upgrade of Cent OS 6.x to Cent OS 7.

In the past, the only official method of upgrading major versions of Cent OS was to wipe and reinstall everything.

Success and Failure Scenarios Again, there are "ways" to get an upgrade done.

In this post we will focus strictly on the official process that is supported by the Cent OS maintainers.

This method is more complex, but would never cause you to accidentally update your entire web stack by using repositories that use package names matching base distribution packages.

## Remove existing/old My SQL ## yum remove mysql mysql-* rm -rf /var/lib/mysql rm -rf /var/log/mysql* ## Install Remi Repository on RHEL/Cent OS 6.7-6.0 ## rpm -Uvh -Uvh Install Remi Repository on RHEL/Cent OS 5.4-5.0 ## rpm -Uvh -Uvh --enablerepo=remi list mysql mysql-server yum --enablerepo=remi install mysql mysql-server [[email protected]]# /usr/bin/mysqladmin -u root -p version /usr/bin/mysqladmin Ver 8.42 Distrib 5.5.28, for Linux on x86_64 Copyright (c) 2000, 2012, Oracle and/or its affiliates.
