Definition: what does focus actually mean?
To concentrate on the essentials (in the job) and yourself not to get bogged down - this is a problem for many people. Usually more for younger people than for older people; for employees more than for self-employed (PDF). At least the ability for the latter is decisive for the entrepreneur's fortune or fiasco.
There is also a nice one from Konfuzuis saying:
If you hunt two hares at the same time, you will not catch any of them.
But what is this property all about? And what is it definition for this?
Anyone who follows the relevant literature and links will come to this conclusion at some point: If you focus, you align yourself to a conscious (!) Goal and dedicate yourself to it with all his strength, energy and passionto achieve it in the end. It is not enough to train and strengthen cognitive abilities with a few concentration exercises. Rather, focus is that purposeful and deliberate focus on a specific goal. Such focused people are not only extremely persistent and stubborn, they can also hardly be distracted or discouraged.
Of course, it's not about just following along Blinkers to trample through life and ignore or mow down everything that gets in your way. That would be pretty stupid, after all, life rarely goes according to plan and Improvisation and adaptability are also important keys to success.
Most big goals, however, are long-term. Goals that we really want to achieve. Because they are important and valuable to us, because they move us forward. They always ask for ours full attention. And it is important not only to remember them regularly, but to focus entirely on them. Or as they say: you not to lose sight of it.
In fact, most successful people share this quality. They all had or have a crucial dream, a vision, a goal that they should achieve with all their might and with a great deal of strength clear focus follow.
The 4 basic rules of focusing
The hard-working is the stupid
Be strategically lazy. You are probably familiar with the Pareto principle, according to which 80 percent of the tasks can often be completed in 20 percent of the time available. The remaining 20 percent of the tasks, however, take 80 percent of the time. This indirectly results in a self-management technique: Instead of wanting to complete 100 percent of the tasks, it is wiser to prioritize them and deal with the tasks that only require 20 percent of the time and energy, but are 80 percent.
Less is more
Never confuse success with actionism. Being able to focus is the exact opposite: not doing a lot, but what is important and right. It's not that difficult: no matter how many items are on your to-do list - one of them is always the most important. So ask yourself honestly: what should be done now? Focus on that alone and first, and devote all your dedication and energy accordingly to this cause. The rest can wait.
Multitasking is crap
You can neither concentrate nor focus as long as there are sources of interference. This realization is a rush, but how many people try to prove the opposite every day? You say: “I can't concentrate!” - and leave your office door open and keep your phone, cell phone and mailbox ready to receive. Not only is this inconsistent, it also creates interruptions and a lot of small coincidences that cloud the focus.
Breaks encourage focus
Our brain is literally bombarded with around 400,000 sensory stimuli every second. At some point the ability to concentrate will inevitably decrease. Therefore, you should always take breaks from everything you do. Ideally, a break of 5 minutes after 45 minutes at the latest. After all, the ability to concentrate without a break increases with age: a first grader can do around 15 minutes at a time, while a 25-year-old can do 45 minutes.
Learning to focus: answer the key question
But the good news is: You can learn to focus. Ultimately, this ability is like a muscle: Those who practice with it regularly become (mentally) stronger and will soon see results.
Perhaps you just don't start with the greatest possible aspiration and goal, but with small steps. You can learn carefully, but the process is exhausting to arduous. So if you want to focus more, you should first direct and focus your attention like a spotlight - on a specific matter.
And regardless of whether it is a short-term or long-term, a small or a large goal; Regardless of whether you perceive real urgency or perceived urgency - in the end, focusing is always about a crucial one Key questionthat only you can answer:
Does what I do or will do bring me closer to my ultimate goal?
If the answer is “no”, you are not (yet) focused enough, but have focused on one Siding emotional.
Tips: Focus in your job and everyday life
Studies come to the conclusion that the focus on clear goals reduces motivation up to 35 percent can increase. In other words, when you focus, you work with more enthusiasm, faster, and better. Good reasons to practice focusing and to use it for tasks.
The problem: At work and in everyday life, it is often difficult for us to really focus our attention on one thing and one goal. Countless things need to be done at the same time, expectations are placed on us from all sides. Difficult but not impossible!
With the following tips manage to maintain focus and thus achieve better results:
Turn off all distractions
The first and most important point when focusing: don't get distracted and interrupted! Sounds simple, but it's a challenge, especially at work. The phone rings, e-mails need to be answered and other tasks keep popping up that need to be done. The only thing that helps: if you want to focus fully on a task, turn off all distractions. Phone on silent, e-mail inbox off, stay away from social media and only take care of other things later.
Don't be too demanding
When you are mentally under-challenged by a task, your brain looks for other stimuli to keep itself occupied. Thoughts wander, then focusing is over. It is better if you dedicate yourself to a todo that challenges you - then it will be easier for you to focus on it.
Avoid too much pressure
With a boss and a deadline under their belt, some people are in top form, but for many it becomes impossible to focus. You keep thinking that you finally have to finish, try to do everything at once and jump from one subtask to the next - you will finish faster in your mind, but the lack of focus means slow work and more errors.
Set small goals
It is hardly possible to focus for hours. At some point even the best concentration and attention is over. You can counteract this by setting smaller goals that need to be achieved in less time. In this way, you will reach the goal within the time in which you are still fully focused. After a break in which you can regenerate, you can then tackle the next small sub-goal.
Set precise times for tasks
In order to be able to focus better, you should set clear periods of time. For example, divide your work day into several phases that you dedicate fully to one task. Around: 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. and again from 3 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. In these fixed blocks you only devote yourself to the previously defined tasks. In this way you really get ahead and have the rest of the working day to devote to the other tasks of everyday professional life.
